How I learned the importance to consider newborns

My son Rijeka was born over a planned cesar cross-section, without surprise. It is not my first child, so I was familiar with standard newborn tests needed in the hospital, including hearing reviews. However, I never imagined that he would not succeed.

After the end of the river screening, the nurses informed me that he failed in his left ear. They convinced me that it was common for the C-Sections of the Baby, because they do not pass through the gender channel, where the liquid is naturally expelled, so it can last longer. Before we were fired, they repeated the test, but he failed again.

I remember turning my husband and asked, “What if something is wrong?”

Despite my concerns, hospital staff did a great job explaining the following steps. We advised that we schedule a meeting in the next month and fortunate, we managed to quickly reach tracking and the river forwarded the third test. The audiologist confirmed that the liquid was probably longer to clear because of the Section C. However, if he failed again, the next step would be the evaluation of a pediatric audio player. It should not pass that evaluation, further testing and possible hearing devices would be needed.

Educated

Looking back, I understand how little I knew about the newborns. Now I understand how important this test is, and I believe that education is one of the most important tools we have. These exams are not only routine procedures – are key to early detection and support.

So if I first wonder my parent that is the test and why it’s important, here’s what I tell them:

  • It is important because the ability of wonder is crucial to learning, brain development and language skills. Early years – especially three years ago – are most critical to the purchase of language.

  • Recognizing hearing loss as soon as possible enables early intervention, which significantly improves language development and communication skills.

  • It is a fast, safe and painless screening that helps identify potential hearing loss early. The test includes one or two gentle procedures, and most babies are spaping through it. Both of my babies they did it.

Bottom line

Today is the river healthy and happy four-year-old. I often think at that time, in that hospital room, I am impatiently waiting for another exam. I would say one thing to myself: Don’t let fear take over. Trust the process, trust professionals, and most importantly, trust yourself as a mother.

Even when things feel uncertain, we are stronger and more capable than we understand. And even if the river would not fail the third time and the hearing device needs, we would like to do the same thing that we could support it. When it comes to our children, we will always fight for what is best for them – that is what is the parent everything.
