What is the story like?

In this award-winning documentary, Ms. Wilma Stephenson teaches culinary arts at Frankford High School in Philadelphia. She is a tough, non-stupidity of a teacher who is also absolutely dedicated to the success of her students. Her students come from low-income background, and with her discipline, she inspires them to learn the chef and compete in competition with culinary arts in which scholarships are given. There is Eric, which helps to raise his blind younger sister. There is a Tyree, who awakened one Christmas as a child to find his home burglary, and all his Christmas Christmas presents were stolen. There is Fatamatou, recent arrival from Africa learning how to succeed in a new environment. Together, these students show that they work hard and sacrifice to achieve their dreams, as long as they hold positive mental attitudes.

This is a great movie. It stands as a strong counter-argument to all who believe that American dream is dead, that teenagers are inherently lazy and unmotivated or have no more right teachers in our schools. Through their actions and efforts, teenagers are chronicles show how hard work, sacrifice and positive attitude go far in life to help achieve strings, no matter how difficult circumstances. As a high school teacher, Ms. Stephenson is transferred to the film as a force of nature: inspired, dull, stern, and never less than 100 percent dedicated to the success of her students.

The challenges are there, and they are known to everyone who live or adults in the urban area. Still, these students show that these challenges meet. What is going out of Pressure stove Whether a film documentation is a difficult-love teacher who continues not only for skills to be excellent chefs, but also the life skills needed for successful outside the classroom and the kitchen.

Talk to your kids about …

  • Families can talk about how the documentary shows the lives of these teenagers. How much is it recording at this time and how many are shown through the interviews in which they discuss their background? What do you think were the challenges that movies were faced?

  • There is no direct, one in one interview with Mrs. Stephenson, but it is pointed out in the entire film that provides guidance and discipline to many aspects of the life of its students. Why do you think her story is not given so much weight as the story of her students?

  • In short stage, Tyrell’s football coach is recorded around their neighborhood, talking and indicates all factories that have been closed in the area in the last decades. How does this reinforces “what is in question” for students competing in culinary art competition? What would the wasted whether this scene was not in the movie?
