I got an epidural for the first time I gave birth, and the whole process was flawless – so I knew I wanted one with another daughter. But this time he distinguished – they move with the fact that he took an anesthesiologist for 30 minutes to insert an epiduralOpens a new window.
As the workforce continued, I felt vibrations in my back. It was so painful with every contraction, but in the end the epidural was pounded. I delivered a happy and healthy baby, Callie, Monday, 9. December 2024. Years. Then I got a headache a few hours later. It was quite painful, but I was distracted by all the newborn bliss and I didn’t think about it. When the anesthesiologist came to check me, I felt good and the next day I cleaned up to go home.
I remember sitting on a couch trying to breastfeed Callie, and suddenly the headache began again. I told my mom he felt like someone cut my head. Then my husband entered the living room – when I looked at him in him, I saw a double.
I had a spinal headache, a rare side effect from the epidural

I called my care team and suggested to take 600 milligrams of ibuprofen. When I laid, the pain was collected. But after a few hours of the department, my head felt like ever. I was worried about the postpartum hypertension, especially because I had high blood pressure during pregnancy. I remembered my doctor’s advice: that I took the greatest dose of medications and didn’t cut it, I should call. I came to that threshold.
At 2 in the morning on Wednesday, about 46 hours after my girlfriend’s birth, I called the doctor and returned to the hospital. Once in an emergency room, the nurse took my blood pressure in the triage and asked about my symptoms. Sounds like you have a spine headache, she told me.

Spinal headaches or headaches on the length of the turbulent, occurs after a spine or epidural anesthesia, says Joshua younger, MDOB-GYN and the director of obstetric anesthesia for the long-distance Jewish Medical Center in New York.
“The headache is caused when the spinal column is inadvertently pierced, and the cerebral spinal fluid leaks,” says Patricia A. Evans, NP, CNM, nurse and midwife in California. “Leaking cerebrospinal fluid reduces the pressure in the brain and the spinal cord, causing the headache.”
Most women who get epidural will not get a spinal headache, says Evans, but it is a possible side effect. Only 1% of those who get some kind of spinal tap happened (as you need for an epidural), according to Stanford medical position.
Anesthesiologist formally diagnosed my spinal headache, which he confirmed was painful, but not dangerous to life. My options were to wait for them, solid water, painkillers, resting and caffeine, or subject to the epidural blood (EBP) process. I was told that EBP will bring instant relief, so he chose it.

The second epidural lasted two minutes and made headaches disappear

Like the second time Mom, I was aware that the vacation would be hard to come and inconsistent. I couldn’t imagine doing anything with my baby – let alone my little ones – with this headache. That is why the idea is to pass the other epidurally so attractive.
The EBP process was similar to my work epidural. But instead of the catheter set up to continue the pain management, anesthesiologist took a little blood from my hand in the bottle and injected into an epidural space.
“The blood injects into an epidural space forms a coat that effectively seals the place of breaking, similarly as a patch seals a hole in the rubber to stop air,” explains the doctor younger. “Pear or” patch “returns the normal level of liquid, relieving the symptoms of headaches.”
The EBP worked as a charm: it lasted less than two minutes and immediately headed.
I had a hospital care team to lie for an hour, then slowly raise my bed every 30 minutes to me closer to the spot. The goal was to ensure that I do not experience any other symptoms, like nausea, when sitting upright. Within five to six hours after arriving at the hospital, I was without pain and fired.

If I have another baby I won’t hesitate to get another epidural
Although my headaches were the result of an epidural, facilitating the pain that brought me during the work was fully valuable. If I get pregnant again, I will absolutely still get an epidural. I share my story Not to scare other moms, but notify them that this can happen – and there is a way to quickly easier!
Ultimately, my headache would probably tank after a few weeks (and the condition rarely causes any other problems, says Regina Krel, MDNeurologist and specialist medications for headaches in New Jersey. Still, I’m glad I entered treatment. I’m proud of myself for listening to my body and I’m not writing my symptoms.
